Space age aesthetic4/20/2023 ![]() When I was growing up, the American programs I watched were all filmed in Los Angeles, and most of the interiors personified a West Coast style,” Godbold says. “Perth is wonderful, but it is one of the most isolated cities on Earth. Here, modern meets earthy with elements like a vintage Kappa lounge chair and a set of steel tables set against a backdrop of Ultrasuede-covered walls and custom shelves crafted with travertine and wood. The owners (a married couple) viewed the apartment as a place tailored to just the two of them, and a decision was made to turn the second bedroom into a cozy den for relaxation. Vintage pieces bring a soulful attitude to an interior, and I’ve used many here.” The line between slick and modern and cold and off-putting can be a fine one. “One time, I was looking at vintage clothing with a coworker, and she commented that old pieces have so much soul. “I used to work in the fashion industry,” the designer recalls. ![]() ![]() Key to the style is the mix of vintage (the Italian travertine coffee table) and new (the Godbold-designed rug), a dichotomy employed throughout. A series of ethereal alabaster ring light fixtures, a pair of Floating Pagoda armchairs with lacquer-and-brass accents, and a low-slung sofa with a mod aesthetic create a look that’s original but wouldn’t be totally unfamiliar to John Koenig (the fictional leader of Moonbase Alpha). It starts in the living room, where red oak panels create curved walls and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed tiles make for textured accents. “The challenge with new homes is to add personality and depth, and I thought about the sci-fi programs I loved while growing up.” Drawing on the futuristic elements from shows like Space: 1999 and the movie Blade Runner, as well as the natural textures and color palettes that were the hallmark of many 1970s-era programs, Godbold, along with general contractor William Ramos, created a house that could be described in the parlance of the era as “groovy.” “This is a newly built apartment and a blank slate,” he says. Years later when a grown-up Godbold, now a designer in the U.S., began working on a Manhattan apartment, he tapped this early interiors infatuation for inspiration. The set design, with its undulating walls, sleek plastic components and low modular furniture caused him to imagine exotic lands-specifically New York City, where he hoped to live one day. Godbold was obsessed with the program, and not just because he enjoyed dreaming about faraway galaxies. In 1976, young Timothy Godbold was watching television in his Perth, Australia, living room, but his mind was thousands of miles away on a fictional lunar station called Moonbase Alpha, the setting for the British show Space: 1999. ![]()

Synthesia meaning4/20/2023 ![]() If they later immediately select the same color for that number again, they could be a potential synesthete. For example, let’s say an individual taking a synesthesia test selects a specific color that they associate with a certain number. ![]() The test taker must also demonstrate that their associations are consistent over time. The reason is that synesthesia is an automatic, involuntary response-so if a person has to take time to think about it, they likely don’t have this trait. Many of these are time-sensitive, meaning that the test taker has to answer quickly. Several tests have been devised to discover whether someone has synesthesia. Psychedelic drugs or a brain injury such as a concussion, tumor, or stroke may induce synesthesia in an individual who was not born with it. That said, an individual may be born with it-known as developmental or ‘genuine’ synesthesia-or it may be induced by specific experiences, known as acquired synesthesia. No clear and singular cause has yet been discovered for why synesthesia happens, or why some people experience it and others do not. ![]() Famous people who had or have synesthesia include Marilyn Monroe, Itzhak Perlman, Duke Ellington, Nikola Tesla, Mickey Hart, and Vincent Van Gogh. Synesthesia seems to be more common in people with autism as well as artistic people, such as painters, musicians, and actors. Mirror-touch synesthesia, in which someone else touches something, and the individual feels what they physically feel (i.e., experiencing the feeling of warmth while watching a person hover their hands over a bonfire).Auditory-tactile synesthesia, wherein sounds elicit tactile sensations in various parts of the body (i.e., a screeching noise causing a cramp in the obliques).Lexical-gustatory synesthesia, which means a person associates a word with a certain taste.Ordinal-linguistic personification, wherein an individual associates numbers, letters, months, and so forth with certain personality traits (i.e., generosity and January, greed and the number seven).Number-form synesthesia, which means a person visualizes a number-map image when thinking of a number.Grapheme-color synesthesia, which means a person associates a letter or number with a color (i.e., blue and the number four).Specific types of associations or projections in synesthesia include: Associative synesthesia involves feeling a strong, involuntary connection between the two, rather than actually experiencing them. Projective synesthesia involves literally seeing or otherwise experiencing actual colors, forms, or shapes after a sensory or cognitive stimulation. There are two main categories of synesthesia: projective and associative. ![]() It’s simply a different way of experiencing the world. Synesthesia typically causes few or no problems for most people who have it. Synesthesia is not considered a disorder or a mental illness, and it is not listed in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). For example, singers like Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel have expressed that they perceive music as a spectrum of color-a likely indication of synesthesia. It's a neurological condition in which the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive area brings about another sensory or cognitive experience. The word “synesthesia” comes from the Greek, meaning "perceive together". Explore Your Synesthesia With Online Therapy ![]()

Fisheye lens photos4/19/2023 ![]() Vivitar 7mm Fisheye - two children on a bench, shifted position / David Bode But shifting position will change the perspective of Lilly a lot, without affecting the background objects. In this shot, the size of the child on the left (Lilly) looks as if she has very long legs. Vivitar 7mm Fisheye - two children on a bench / David Bode It's very interesting what you can get when you're shooting with a fisheye lens. Extreme Distortion Vivitar 7mm Fisheye - a more extreme example of the distortion from fisheye lenses / David Bodeĭepending on where the objects are in your scene, as you get really close, a fisheye lens exaggerates the perspective and the spatial placement of objects in an extreme way. If you compose your shots carefully though, you can make them look wide but not super-distorted. As long as the horizon is near the centre of the lens, it looks fairly normal, but if it gets above or below that area, things start looking weird. It depends on what you're shooting, the distance you are away from any immediate objects in the foreground, and where the horizon is if there's one in the shot. The same lens was used here on the beach, and what’s interesting about it is that the characteristic, hyper-distorted fisheye look is missing. ![]() ‘Normal’ Photos With a Fisheye Vivitar 7mm Fisheye - a beach looking 'normal,' without a distinctive curve / David Bode The building in the upper left-hand corner of the frame is actually behind the camera, behind the car it was taken from, and that’s very strange, but that's what a fisheye lens will give you. The camera was up against the windshield, and particularly in the example above, the perspective is really weird.
