For example, let’s say an individual taking a synesthesia test selects a specific color that they associate with a certain number. ![]() The test taker must also demonstrate that their associations are consistent over time. The reason is that synesthesia is an automatic, involuntary response-so if a person has to take time to think about it, they likely don’t have this trait. Many of these are time-sensitive, meaning that the test taker has to answer quickly. Several tests have been devised to discover whether someone has synesthesia. Psychedelic drugs or a brain injury such as a concussion, tumor, or stroke may induce synesthesia in an individual who was not born with it. That said, an individual may be born with it-known as developmental or ‘genuine’ synesthesia-or it may be induced by specific experiences, known as acquired synesthesia. Mirror-touch synesthesia, in which someone else touches something, and the individual feels what they physically feel (i.e., experiencing the feeling of warmth while watching a person hover their hands over a bonfire).Auditory-tactile synesthesia, wherein sounds elicit tactile sensations in various parts of the body (i.e., a screeching noise causing a cramp in the obliques).Lexical-gustatory synesthesia, which means a person associates a word with a certain taste.Ordinal-linguistic personification, wherein an individual associates numbers, letters, months, and so forth with certain personality traits (i.e., generosity and January, greed and the number seven).Number-form synesthesia, which means a person visualizes a number-map image when thinking of a number.Grapheme-color synesthesia, which means a person associates a letter or number with a color (i.e., blue and the number four).Specific types of associations or projections in synesthesia include: Associative synesthesia involves feeling a strong, involuntary connection between the two, rather than actually experiencing them. Projective synesthesia involves literally seeing or otherwise experiencing actual colors, forms, or shapes after a sensory or cognitive stimulation. There are two main categories of synesthesia: projective and associative. ![]() It’s simply a different way of experiencing the world. Synesthesia typically causes few or no problems for most people who have it. Synesthesia is not considered a disorder or a mental illness, and it is not listed in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). For example, singers like Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel have expressed that they perceive music as a spectrum of color-a likely indication of synesthesia. It's a neurological condition in which the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive area brings about another sensory or cognitive experience.
